International Design

Since the hypothetical business we're providing services for is an international company with headquarters in Japan and the U.S., I started thinking about the packaging I see in Lotte, an asian market in Columbia, MD. In incredibly simple-speak, I just think the packaging there is more fun and engaging than the brands of things you see at your local Super Fresh. Candy, in particular, caught my eye. Here's an example:
The colors are always bright and vibrant, with large lettering and, honestly, it's not always clear what it is, but since it's so fun to look at you pick it up anyway. I wonder if this approach to packaging would translate to a U.S. market. Here's an example of U.S. candy packaging:

Browns and reds seem to be used more - like Reeses and Godiva. I'm not sure if there's different packaging used in different markets for the same candy - something I want to check. I'll keep you updated. Commercials, after all, are incredibly different country to country. Makes me rethink my approach to Project 1. What colors should I use? Should I use symbols that are internationally recognizable while being nonoffensive, etc. Much more to consider than a cool design.
